Bowl me Over Granola Take #3: Man made muesli bars

So we’ve tried Cath’s Granola Bars, Mom’s Granola Bars, Super Seedy Bars… yet to find the perfect granola bar combination of healthy and delicious.

Ladies, we may have to admit defeat.

Delicious, healthy, high protein, sugar free, gluten free healthy fat granola bars do exist. And they were man-made, a ‘la my sister’s boyfriend, Tim. He was inspired by this recipe from Caroline Bakker , made a few tweaks, and of course I couldn’t resist making a few of my own.

Clean Eating Granola Bars - sugar free high protein, gluten free


  • 250g oats (mixture of quick and rolled)
  • 75g mixed seeds
  • 200g organic, sugar free peanut butter/ make your own/ make your own macadamia nut butter
  • 75g honey
  • 100g cranberries
  • 2 mashed, vrot bananas (for max flavour)
  • 90g Herbalife Formula 3 Protein Powder
  • Optional: almonds and other nuts


Roast the oats in the oven until golden brown – be careful not to burn! Then mix them with protein powder and seeds. Melt the honey and PB in the microwave, then mix all the ingredients together – using your hands is easiest, and most delicious.

Spoon the mixture “into a flat dish thing” (Tim, us ladies call this a baking tray). Press down and compress as much as possible. Let the tray sit in the fridge for an hour, then cut into bars. If you cut the above into 18 bars, each will have 11g protein, and 9g healthy fat. And, the diligent accountant her is, Tim said each will cost about R6. Take that, Cafe Makemefatandpoor!
