All over the health blogosphere you will find “Overnight Oats”.. I’m going to go retro with my new alltime, anytime, all-the-time obsession: Bircher muesli.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup plain yoghurt
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 100ml orange or apple juice
- 4 scoops Herbalife Formula 1
- 2 grated apples
- 1 Tbsp honey (or more, to taste)
- pinch of salt
- dash of cinnamon
- Add-ins of choice: Raisins (if you must), cranberries, walnuts, goji berries, banana, seeds, coconut
Directions:
Mix all the above and leave overnight to look forward to the next morning. Make extra, as it does last in the fridge for about 5 days:
Here mine is, right between the yoghurt and the er… Black Label Quart.
Did you Know?
“Birchermüesli” was invented by Dr Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner (1867-1939), a pioneer of the biological health medicine and whole foods diet. And with a name like that, he must know what he’s talking about.
In the 1900’s meat was believed to be best suited and most valuable food for humans, vegetables and fruits were considered food of the poor people. Dr Bircher, however, continued to believe in what he called “food of the sunlight”, meals based on biological, natural ingredients; and created Bircher Muesli using natural ingredients.
The original recipe used condensed milk, a compromise due to hygiene concerns with fresh milk in the 1900’s per pasteurization and the not-so-humble fridge. He recommended soaking the oats overnight as the oats of yester-year were a lot hardier than today’s more refined versions.
